About TechWorth
An independent UK site that works out whether the technology you already own is worth keeping, repairing or replacing — and shows you the figures behind the answer.
Why it exists
The advice available when a phone starts feeling old is written almost entirely by people who profit from you replacing it. Reviews cover new products because new products are what gets reviewed. Comparison sites rank what pays them. Nobody writes the article that says “your phone is fine, spend a small amount on a battery and keep it another two years”, because there is no money in that article.
It is also, very often, the correct answer. TechWorth exists to give it — and to give the opposite answer, with the same working shown, when replacing really is the better deal.
Who runs it
TechWorth is operated by Rabbits Foot Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. It is independent: not a retailer, not a repairer, not a manufacturer, and not owned by any of them. We sell nothing, and we hold no stock.
The two rules
Nearly every design decision here follows from two rules, and both are enforced by the code rather than by good intentions.
- Never publish a figure without a source. No price, repair cost, depreciation rate or support estimate is written into the software. Each is a stored record carrying where it came from and when it was last verified, and both are shown to you. A figure that happens to be correct today but cannot be traced is treated as a defect, because you have no way to check it and no way to know when it went stale. - Commission cannot reach a recommendation. The part of the system that decides what to recommend has no access to the part that knows what earns money, and an automated test fails the build if that boundary is ever crossed. Given that the correct answer in this category is usually the one that pays us least, that separation is the whole product. How we make money explains the arrangement.
How it is built
Recommendations are produced by a deterministic engine: the same answers always give the same result, every step of the calculation is recorded as it happens, and each result notes which version of the engine and which published set of figures produced it, so it can be reproduced months later.
Where artificial intelligence is used, it explains — it never decides, and it is not permitted to produce a number. How we work it out describes the method in detail.
Where it has got to
The catalogue covers UK phones, tablets and laptops we have sourced specifications for, with guides and a keep-or-upgrade questionnaire. Shop listings appear only when we have observed an offer from a joined retail programme. WeBuyAnyPhone, Envirofone and Grade Mobile have accepted us: where we show a selling CTA it is an affiliate link to get a quote from them, not a price we have observed. Empty blocks are omitted rather than shown empty.
Coverage
The United Kingdom, in pounds sterling, covering phones, tablets and laptops. Prices, repair costs and support arrangements differ enough between countries that a figure from another market would be misleading here, so we do not carry one. Other categories stay in the data model until they have sourced products of their own — there is no empty hub for them.
